Graduate Teaching Assistant (NextGen Teachers)

We're looking for motivated graduates ready to step into a rewarding role supporting children and young people with additional needs in schools across Burgess Hill. This opportunity is ideal for those who want hands-on experience while building a long-term career in education, particularly within SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities).

In this role, you'll work closely with pupils who have a range of needs, including autism, speech and language challenges, hearing impairments, and social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs. You'll play a key part in helping them access learning, build confidence, and thrive in the classroom.

Why this role?

  • Gaining experience in Teaching Assistant and classrooms
  • Access professional learning modules (including SEND, phonics, behaviour, autism, and classroom practice)
  • Build a strong understanding of the national curriculum
  • Earn £90-£110 per day while you train
  • Shape your experience around your interests (e.g. autism, SEMH, speech and language, or mainstream settings)

Graduates from all degree backgrounds are welcome. If you studied Psychology or Sociology, this is an especially strong match - you'll be able to apply your knowledge in areas like mental health, behaviour, and child development in a practical setting.

What you'll be able to gain

  • First-hand classroom experience in a supportive school environment
  • Specialist knowledge in supporting children with additional needs
  • Practical skills in behaviour management, inclusion, and safeguarding
  • Ongoing mentoring and training from experienced education professionals
  • Access to additional CPD courses to deepen your expertise

What we're looking for

  • A genuine interest in working with children or young people
  • A degree (completed within the last 5 years, any subject)
  • A caring, patient, and adaptable approach
  • Strong communication and confidence in managing behaviour
  • A willingness to learn and grow professionally
  • Previous experience with children is beneficial, but not essential
  • A driving licence is helpful, but not required
  • An enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)

Training & development

The NextGen programme combines in-school experience with a tailored training curriculum created by experienced education leaders. You'll develop skills in:

  • Supporting pupils with autism and additional needs
  • Behaviour de-escalation strategies
  • Inclusive classroom practice
  • Safeguarding and child protection
  • Maximising your impact on pupil learning
