SEN Teaching Assistant - Permanent
SEN Teaching Assistant
Location: Leeds
Contract: Permanent
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am - 3:30pm
Start Date: ASAP
Salary: £19,860 - £21,168
About the Role
NextGen Teachers are delighted to be supporting a welcoming and inclusive school in Leeds who are looking for a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join their team.
This role would suit someone with previous experience supporting children with SEN or additional needs. Experience working within EYFS or with Early Years-aged children is highly preferable, as the skills developed within an Early Years setting are highly transferable to this role, particularly around communication, sensory development, independence, emotional regulation and supporting children at their individual developmental stages.
You will provide 1:1 and small-group support, working closely with teachers and other professionals to meet individual needs and help pupils access learning and develop their independence.
The role may also involve supporting pupils with personal care, toileting, hygiene and other intimate care needs, so candidates must be comfortable with this aspect of the role.
Key Responsibilities
- Support pupils with SEN and additional needs to access learning safely and confidently.
- Provide 1:1 and small-group support under the guidance of the class teacher.
- Support children's communication, social development, independence and learning.
- Use skills and approaches developed through EYFS experience to support pupils' individual developmental needs.
- Help implement EHCPs, individual support plans and care plans.
- Support positive behaviour and emotional regulation.
- Assist with personal care, toileting, hygiene and welfare needs where required.
- Support pupils with health, physical and therapy needs where appropriate.
- Monitor and report on pupil progress, wellbeing and development.
- Create a safe, nurturing and stimulating learning environment.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, families and other professionals.
- Support pupils during lessons, break times and school activities.
- Follow safeguarding, health and safety and school policies.
Requirements
- Previous experience supporting children with SEN or additional needs is essential.
- Experience working within EYFS / with Early Years-aged children is highly preferable.
- Previous experience providing personal care is desirable, or you must be comfortable undertaking personal care when required.
- A genuine passion for helping children reach their full potential.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- A patient, nurturing and supportive approach.
- Sound knowledge of safeguarding and related procedures.
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one.
- Minimum GCSE Grade C/4 (or equivalent) in English, Maths and Science.
- Level 2/3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning (or equivalent) - desirable.
- Team Teach trained - desirable.
- Moving and Handling trained - desirable.
Why EYFS Experience Is Valuable
While EYFS experience is not essential, candidates who have worked within Early Years settings are particularly encouraged to apply. The ability to support communication, sensory development, early independence, emotional regulation, social interaction and individual developmental needs can be highly transferable when working with pupils with SEN.
If you have SEN experience, ideally alongside EYFS or Early Years experience, and are passionate about helping children develop and thrive, we'd love to hear from you.
