PMLD Specialist Teaching Assistant

Location: Wakefield
Contract: Temporary to Permanent, Term Time Only, Monday-Friday (8:30am-3:30pm)
Start Date: ASAP
Salary: £92 - £95 per day (depending on experience)

NextGen Teachers are recruiting a Teaching Assistant for a specialist SEN school in Wakefield, supporting pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) and complex physical, medical, and sensory needs.

This role involves supporting learners through a highly personalised, multi-sensory approach, helping them engage with learning, develop communication, and improve their overall quality of life in a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment.

The Role

  • Support pupils with PMLD, including complex learning, physical, and medical needs
  • Deliver multi-sensory learning activities focused on touch, sound, light, movement, and interaction
  • Use communication strategies such as objects of reference, sensory cues, and intensive interaction
  • Support pupils with personal care, including feeding, toileting, and hygiene
  • Assist with mobility and positioning, including the use of specialist equipment where required
  • Support emotional wellbeing and engagement through consistent routines and sensory regulation
  • Work closely with teachers, therapists, and support staff to provide holistic, individualised support
  • Encourage small steps of progress, focusing on engagement, responsiveness, and independence

Requirements

  • Experience supporting children or young people with PMLD or complex SEN needs
  • Experience providing personal care
  • Understanding of multi-sensory learning approaches and alternative communication methods
  • Knowledge of moving and handling (or willingness to be trained)
  • Patient, calm, and highly nurturing approach
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
  • Good understanding of safeguarding
