We are seeking to appoint an exceptional and ambitious Head of English to lead our highly successful department from September 2026. This is a permanent leadership opportunity within an outstanding secondary school in Kirklees, known for its high academic standards, exemplary behaviour, and high-attaining, motivated students.

This role would suit an experienced English leader or an outstanding practitioner ready to take the next step into middle/senior leadership within a high-performing environment.

About the Role

As Head of English, you will provide clear strategic direction for the department, ensuring consistently excellent teaching and outcomes across Key Stages 3-5. You will lead curriculum development, monitor student progress, and drive continuous improvement while maintaining a strong classroom presence.

You will work collaboratively with senior leaders and colleagues to promote literacy across the school and contribute to whole-school improvement priorities.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the English department to secure outstanding GCSE and A Level outcomes.

• Design and deliver a challenging, knowledge-rich curriculum that stretches high-attaining students.

• Model outstanding classroom practice and maintain a teaching timetable.

• Monitor teaching standards, provide feedback, and support staff development.

• Analyse performance data to inform planning and raise attainment.

• Promote reading for pleasure and academic enrichment opportunities.

• Uphold and model the school's high standards of behaviour and professionalism.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

• A proven track record of excellent classroom teaching in English.

• Strong subject knowledge across literature and language.

• Experience of improving outcomes and leading initiatives.

• The ability to inspire, motivate, and develop staff and students.

• Excellent organisational and communication skills.
