Autism Specialist Assistant

Location: Leeds

Contract: Full-time / Temporary to permanent (term time only). Monday to Friday (8:00-3:30)

Start date: ASAP

Salary: £19,000 - £21,000 (dependant on experience)

About the Role


NextGen Teachers are proud to be working with a collection of vibrant, inclusive special schools in Leeds, who are seeking compassionate and motivated Autism Specialist Assistants to join their skilled teams. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about and experienced in supporting children with Autism and complex needs to thrive, both in and out of the classroom.

You'll play a key role in helping pupils build communication, social, and learning skills, while also supporting their wellbeing and independence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide tailored support with communication, social interaction, sensory regulation, and behaviour.
  • Implement specialist strategies such as visual supports, structured routines, social stories, and non-verbal communication systems.
  • Adapt classroom activities to ensure learning is accessible and meaningful for every child.
  • Deliver one-to-one and small group support to help pupils engage with the curriculum.
  • Encourage play, friendships, and positive peer relationships.
  • Support children with emotional regulation and wellbeing, promoting coping strategies.
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and parents/carers to provide consistent, joined-up support.
  • Contribute to Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behaviour support plans.

Requirements

  • Experience supporting children or young people with complex SEN needs.
  • Good knowledge of autism and related conditions.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to use positive behaviour management strategies.
  • Passion for helping children achieve their full potential.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding practices.
  • Enhanced DBS (on the update service or willingness to obtain one).
  • Minimum of Grade C/4 in GCSE English, Maths, and Science.
  • Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning (or equivalent).
