SEMH 1:1 Teaching Assistant (Secondary)
Location: Huddersfield (HD2)
Contract: Full-Time, Term-Time Only
Hours: 8:30 - 3:30
Salary: £92.60 minimum per day
We are recruiting on behalf of a specialist secondary provision in Huddersfield (HD2) that supports young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The school provides a structured, nurturing, and therapeutic environment where students are encouraged to develop confidence, resilience, and the skills they need to succeed both academically and personally.
This is an excellent opportunity for a compassionate, resilient, and dedicated Teaching Assistant to provide 1:1 support for a secondary-aged pupil, helping them to engage with learning, manage their emotions, and achieve positive outcomes within a supportive educational setting.
The Role
- Provide dedicated 1:1 support for a secondary-aged pupil with SEMH needs throughout the school day
- Build a positive, trusting relationship to help the pupil feel safe, supported, and motivated to learn
- Work closely with the class teacher and wider pastoral team to deliver tailored support strategies
- Encourage engagement in lessons and support access to the curriculum through differentiated approaches
- Promote emotional regulation, resilience, confidence, and independence
- Support the implementation of behaviour support plans and de-escalation strategies where required
- Monitor and record pupil progress, behaviour, and wellbeing, providing regular feedback to teaching staff
- Work collaboratively with teachers, families, and external professionals to ensure the best outcomes for the young person
- Contribute positively to the school's inclusive and supportive ethos
About You
- Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs, challenging behaviour, or additional learning needs
- Experience within a school, alternative provision, youth work, residential care, or similar setting is highly desirable
- Calm, patient, resilient, and able to build positive relationships with young people
- Confident managing challenging behaviour using positive behaviour management strategies
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one
- Relevant Teaching Assistant qualification (Level 2 or Level 3) is desirable but not essential for candidates with suitable experience
