Primary School Caretaker

Location: Bradford
Contract: Temporary Fixed-Term Contract (August - October 2026) with the potential to be extended
Hours: Variable hours (flexible shifts to meet the needs of the school)

NextGen Teachers are recruiting on behalf of a welcoming primary school in Bradford for a reliable and proactive School Caretaker to join their team on a temporary fixed-term contract from August through to October 2026, with the potential for the role to be extended.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced caretaker, facilities assistant, site supervisor or maintenance professional looking to work within a school environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the school site remains safe, secure and well maintained for pupils, staff and visitors.

The Role

As the School Caretaker, your responsibilities will include:

  • Opening and securing the school premises
  • Carrying out minor repairs, maintenance and general DIY tasks
  • Ensuring the buildings and grounds are clean, safe and well maintained
  • Completing routine health and safety inspections
  • Monitoring and reporting maintenance issues
  • Liaising with contractors and supervising work carried out on site
  • Assisting with setting up rooms and facilities for school events
  • Monitoring heating, lighting and basic building systems
  • Supporting the school in maintaining a safe and welcoming learning environment

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Previous experience in a caretaking, facilities, maintenance or similar role
  • Good practical DIY and maintenance skills
  • A good understanding of health and safety procedures
  • The ability to work independently and manage their workload effectively
  • Strong organisational and communication skills
  • A flexible, reliable and proactive approach
  • Basic IT skills for reporting maintenance issues where required

Desirable Qualifications & Training

While not essential, the following qualifications or training would be advantageous:

  • Health & Safety at Work
  • Manual Handling
  • Fire Marshal/Fire Safety
  • Emergency First Aid at Work
  • COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health)
  • Asbestos Awareness
  • Working at Height
  • Legionella Awareness
  • IOSH Working Safely (or equivalent)
  • Building or Property Maintenance qualifications

Safeguarding

An enhanced DBS check on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one) and satisfactory references are required. Experience working within a school or educational setting would be beneficial but is not essential.
