Sensory Support Practitioner
Location: Leeds
Contract: Temporary to permanent (term time only). Monday to Friday (8:30-3:30)
Start date: ASAP
Salary: £90 - £95 per day (dependant on experience)
About the Role
NextGen Teachers are proud to be partnering with a network of specialist SEN schools across Leeds that are dedicated to transforming the lives of learners with additional needs.
Every child's journey is unique, guided by their Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). As part of the team, you'll play a vital role in helping each learner achieve their full potential. Your empathy, creativity, and commitment will have a direct impact on their progress, wellbeing, and independence.
These schools follow a pathway-based learning model, offering highly personalised education that reflects each learner's strengths, abilities, and aspirations.
They are now seeking Specialist Support Assistants to join their dedicated teams. In this role, you'll work with students through a multi-sensory, non-subject-specific curriculum designed to nurture engagement, emotional regulation, physical health, and overall quality of life.
Key Responsibilities
- Support learners with complex needs, including Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD)
- Promote a multi-sensory approach to learning through touch, sound, light, movement, and smell
- Work collaboratively within a team that maintains a high staff-to-learner ratio
- Use communication strategies such as Makaton, communication books, and visual aids
- Provide personal care to support learners' comfort and dignity
- Assist learners who require positional changes throughout the day to promote physical and mobility development
Requirements
- Previous experience working with learners who have complex SEN needs
- Experience providing personal care
- Patience, empathy, and effective positive behaviour management skills
- Willingness to support offsite educational experiences
- A genuine passion for helping learners achieve their potential
- Understanding of safeguarding practices and accurate record-keeping
- Team Teach trained (or willingness to complete training)
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
- Minimum of Grade C/4 in GCSE English, Maths, and Science
