SEN / SEMH Teaching Assistant
Job Title: SEN/SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: S71
Pay: £90-£95 per day
Hours: 8:30am - 3:30pm, Monday to Friday
Contract: Permanent, term time only (13 weeks holiday per year)
Start Date: ASAP
Overview:
NextGen Teachers are recruiting for a passionate and experienced Specialist Teaching Assistant / Group Guide to join a welcoming SEMH school in Barnsley. This permanent role is ideal for someone dedicated to supporting children and young people with complex social, emotional, and behavioural needs - helping them build confidence, develop emotional resilience, and achieve their full potential.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
Provide focused 1:1 and small-group support for students with SEMH and complex needs
Plan and facilitate smooth transitions between lessons and daily activities
Build consistent, trusting relationships to help students regulate emotions and engage positively
Model calm, supportive behaviour and reinforce clear, respectful boundaries
Collaborate with teaching staff to deliver tailored learning and support plans
Create a safe, structured environment where every child feels valued and understood
Essential Criteria:
Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent)
Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH or complex behavioural needs
Strong understanding of positive behaviour support and de-escalation techniques
Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Calm, confident, and adaptable in challenging situations
GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English
