Are you passionate about making a genuine difference in the lives of young people with Special Educational Needs?
NextGen Teachers are proud to be recruiting for a unique and highly rewarding opportunity within a specialist SEN school in Leeds. We are looking for a compassionate and dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant & Travel Buddy to provide tailored classroom support while helping a learner develop the confidence and independence to travel safely using public transport.
This is far more than a traditional Teaching Assistant role. You'll play a key part in preparing a young person for adulthood by developing their independence, resilience and essential life skills.
The Role
As an SEN Teaching Assistant & Travel Buddy, you will:
Provide personalised 1:1 support throughout the school day, enabling the student to access learning and achieve their individual targets.
Encourage confidence, communication, emotional wellbeing and independence within the classroom.
Deliver practical travel training before and/or after school, supporting the learner to travel safely and confidently using public transport.
Teach essential life skills including journey planning, reading timetables, recognising landmarks, road safety and personal safety awareness.
Gradually reduce support as the learner develops confidence and becomes more independent.
Work collaboratively with teachers, parents, therapists and other professionals to ensure consistent support and positive outcomes.
Monitor progress, maintain accurate records and adapt strategies to meet the learner's changing needs.
About You
We're looking for someone who is:
Passionate about supporting children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Patient, empathetic and encouraging, with a calm and positive approach.
Confident using public transport and enthusiastic about teaching practical life skills.
A strong communicator who can build positive, trusting relationships.
Proactive, flexible and committed to promoting independence.
Experienced in education, care or support work (desirable but not essential).
A full UK driving licence holder (advantageous but not essential).
