Location: Leeds
Contract: Temporary to Permanent, Term-Time Only
Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30am-3:30pm
Start Date: ASAP
Pay: £90-£95 per day (dependent on experience)
About the Role
NextGen Teachers is partnering with specialist SEN schools in Leeds to recruit Learning and Life Skills Support Assistants for the Towards Independence Pathway.
This pathway supports more able SEN learners who, while having EHCPs and complex needs, are capable of engaging with semi-formal, subject-based learning and developing increasing independence. Learners are encouraged to make informed choices, manage aspects of their daily life, and apply their skills in real-life contexts.
The curriculum blends academic learning, functional life skills, vocational experiences, and community participation, helping learners gain confidence, self-sufficiency, and practical independence both in and out of the classroom.
As a Learning and Life Skills Support Assistant, you will help learners to thrive by supporting structured teaching sessions - including Maths for Life, life skills, and project-based learning - and promoting personal, social, and practical independence.
Key Responsibilities
Support more able SEN learners within a semi-formal, life-skills-focused learning environment
Implement EHCP targets to enhance communication, independence, and practical life skills
Support structured lessons and learning that promotes decision-making and autonomy
Use strategies such as project-based learning, Lego Therapy, and visual supports
Encourage co- and self-regulation, emotional development, and positive behaviour
Provide sensory support where required, including sensory circuits
Work collaboratively within a high staff-to-learner ratio team
Support offsite and community-based learning, helping learners apply skills in real-life contexts
Provide personal care in line with individual care plans while fostering dignity and independence
Requirements
Experience supporting learners with complex SEN needs, particularly those capable of semi-formal learning
Experience providing personal care
Patient, empathetic, and confident in encouraging independence and positive behaviour
Strong understanding of safeguarding and accurate record-keeping
Team Teach trained (or willingness to complete training)
Enhanced DBS (or willingness to apply)
GCSE Grade C/4 or above in English, Maths, and Science
