A New Chapter for Inclusive Education: Plans Approved for Purpose-Built Autism School in Kirklees

In an exciting step forward for inclusive education, Kirklees Council has approved plans for a brand-new, purpose-built school for autistic pupils in the district. The new facility will become the future home of Woodley School and College, currently based at Dog Kennel Bank in Huddersfield, and will cater for up to 180 pupils aged 5 to 19.
The school is set to relocate to a specially designed site on Fernside Avenue in Almondbury, providing a modern, supportive learning environment where pupils with autism can thrive; academically, socially and emotionally.
Building a School Around Pupils’ Needs
For many families of autistic children, accessing the right support locally has long been a challenge. This development represents more than just a new building; it's a tailored environment that prioritises the specific needs of autistic learners.
Cllr Jane Rylah, Cabinet Member for Education, described the move as “a significant milestone” and commented: “Woodley School delivers excellent education and support, and this new purpose-built facility will allow us to extend that offer to even more children and young people.
The new school will provide a tailored environment where pupils can thrive and reach their full potential.”
Part of a Bigger Vision
The investment in Woodley School is part of Kirklees Council’s wider transformation of SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) provision. Alongside this project, the council is also rebuilding and relocating Joseph Norton Academy, which supports pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, and expanding SEND capacity across multiple schools in the district.
These projects are driven by the council’s "Our Kirklees Futures" vision, a collaborative commitment between schools, colleges and education partners to create an inclusive system where every learner is supported to succeed, no matter their background or needs.
What This Means for Families
For families across Kirklees, the new Woodley School means more than just increased places, it offers peace of mind. It’s about knowing that children will have access to high-quality, specialist education closer to home, delivered in an environment that is built around their wellbeing and growth.
At NextGen Education, we believe every child deserves to feel seen, supported and celebrated. Developments like this are a powerful reminder of what’s possible when investment meets ambition and when inclusion sits at the heart of education planning.
