Are you passionate about supporting children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs?

We're recruiting for a Primary SEMH Teaching Assistant / Learning Support Assistant to join a specialist primary school in Horsham, supporting children with SEMH, Autism (ASC), ADHD, and additional learning needs.

This is an exciting opportunity for Teaching Assistants, Learning Support Assistants, Support Workers, Care Workers, Nursery Practitioners, Youth Workers, or anyone with experience supporting children to develop a rewarding career within specialist education.

Working in small classes alongside experienced teachers, therapists, and pastoral staff, you'll play a vital role in helping children feel safe, build confidence, regulate emotions, and re-engage with learning.

The Role

As a Primary SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will provide both classroom and 1:1 support, helping pupils overcome barriers to learning while developing their social, emotional, and academic skills.

You'll support children through a nurturing, relationship-led approach, encouraging positive behaviour, resilience, and independence every day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis and in small groups
  • Assisting children with SEMH, Autism (ASC), ADHD, and additional learning needs
  • Supporting emotional regulation and positive behaviour strategies
  • Helping pupils engage with literacy, numeracy, and classroom learning
  • Encouraging confidence, independence, and social development
  • Building positive and trusting relationships with pupils
  • Working closely with teachers, therapists, and pastoral teams
  • Creating a calm, safe, and engaging learning environment
  • Following safeguarding procedures and promoting pupil wellbeing

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Experience as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, SEN TA, Behaviour Mentor, Support Worker, Care Worker, Nursery Practitioner, Youth Worker, or similar
  • Experience supporting children with SEMH, SEND, Autism (ASC), ADHD, or additional needs
  • A calm, patient, and resilient approach
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Confidence supporting behaviour and emotional wellbeing
  • A genuine passion for helping children overcome barriers to learning
  • An interest in building a long-term career within specialist education
