SEN Teacher - Informal Learners

Location: Leeds
Contract: Full-time (Monday-Friday, 8:30am-3:30pm)
Start Date: September 2026
Salary: MPS-UPS + SEN Allowance

We are working in partnership with a specialist school in Leeds that supports children and young people with complex Special Educational Needs. The school is seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEN Teacher to work with informal learners, delivering highly personalised, engagement-led learning experiences.

This is a setting where every learner follows an individualised pathway. Pupils are working at a pre-formal or informal level, with learning centred around communication, sensory exploration, emotional regulation, and the development of independence. Teaching focuses on engagement, interaction, and responsiveness, rather than formal academic outcomes.

Learners have a range of complex needs, which may include Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD), epilepsy, multi-sensory impairments, muscular dystrophy, and associated communication needs. This role requires a strong focus on consistency, care, and building meaningful connections, alongside teaching and learning.

The Role

  • Plan and deliver engagement-based, sensory-rich learning experiences aligned with EHCP outcomes
  • Facilitate learning through interaction, play, and exploration rather than formal instruction
  • Create a calm, structured, and highly supportive environment for learners
  • Use a range of communication approaches (e.g. AAC, PECS, intensive interaction)
  • Observe, assess, and record progress through small-step achievements and engagement levels
  • Work closely with a multidisciplinary team, families, and external professionals
  • Support pupils with personal care needs where required
  • Assist with positioning, mobility, and physical development
  • Promote emotional regulation and positive behaviour approaches
  • Deliver sensory-based activities such as sensory circuits and therapeutic interventions
  • Contribute to a collaborative and inclusive school community

What We Are Looking For

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Experience working with pupils with complex SEN, particularly PMLD or informal learners
  • A strong understanding of pre-formal / informal curriculum approaches (e.g. engagement model)
  • Confidence in supporting personal care needs
  • A calm, patient, and reflective approach
  • Team Teach training (or willingness to complete it)
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • A clear understanding of safeguarding
  • A genuine passion for supporting pupils with complex needs to access meaningful learning experiences

This is a highly rewarding opportunity to join a supportive specialist setting where progress is measured in moments of connection, engagement, and development, and every achievement, no matter how small, is celebrated.
