Autism Support Teaching Assistant

Location: Wakefield
Contract: Temporary to Permanent, Term Time Only, Monday-Friday (8:30am-3:30pm)
Start Date: ASAP
Salary: £90 - £95 per day (depending on experience)

NextGen Teachers are recruiting a Teaching Assistant for a specialist SEN school in Wakefield, supporting pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and associated communication and sensory needs.

This role involves supporting learners with autism through structured routines, visual communication strategies, and sensory-aware approaches, helping them engage with education, build confidence, and develop independence in a safe and supportive environment.

The Role

  • Support pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and associated communication and learning needs

  • Assist with structured learning activities using visual supports and clear routines

  • Use communication strategies such as PECS, visual timetables, symbols, and simplified language

  • Support emotional regulation and positive behaviour strategies

  • Help pupils develop social communication and independence skills

  • Work closely with teachers, therapists, and support staff to provide consistent support

Requirements

  • Experience supporting children or young people with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) or additional needs

  • Team Teach trained and confident supporting behaviour that may challenge

  • Understanding of sensory needs and autism-friendly strategies

  • Patient, calm, and consistent approach

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)

  • Good understanding of safeguarding
