Salary: £19,000 - £21,000 (dependent on experience)

NextGen Teachers are recruiting a SEN & SEMH Learning Support Assistant to join a specialist secondary provision supporting students aged 11-18 with complex needs. This is a full-time, term-time only role with small class sizes and the opportunity to move onto a permanent contract. This role is based in Wakefield / Pontefract (WF7).

The school supports learners with severe, complex and profound learning difficulties, including autism, sensory impairments, communication needs, and physical or medical needs, requiring high levels of tailored support.
Students follow multi-sensory and semi-formal curriculum pathways, with learning broken down into small, accessible steps to develop communication, independence and life skills.

This role is ideal for candidates looking to support learners who require consistent adult support, structured environments and personalised approaches.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support students aged 11-18 with complex SEN and SEMH needs
  • Provide 1:1 support and small group learning
  • Assist with multi-sensory learning activities
  • Support communication strategies (visuals, gestures, simplified language)
  • Help develop independence and life skills
  • Support behaviour regulation and emotional wellbeing
  • Assist with personal care where required
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and therapists

Requirements

  • Experience working with SEN, complex needs, care or support settings
  • Patient, calm and resilient approach
  • Comfortable supporting learners with communication difficulties
  • Ability to build strong, trusting relationships
  • Team player with a proactive mindset
  • Experience with personal care (desirable but not essential)
